Origin of Funk

The origin of Funk is a long way term…

Although the reign of funk is far away (1970-77, more or less), its influence has been enormous. And the best we can do to claim it is to define it. Explain what it is, explain how it came about, remember how it was James Brown who shaped it, changing the black music forever. Also, once you know what funk is, you will see the world differently, because suddenly there will be music that is funky and there will be music (less fun) that is not funky.

Funk is a musical genre that was born between the mid to late 1960s when mainly African-American musicians fused soul, jazz, Latin rhythms  and R & B resulting in a new rhythmic and danceable musical form. Funk reduces the weight of the melody and harmony and, in exchange, gives more weight to the percussion and the electric bass line.

Funk songs are usually based on a vamp (a repeated figure, section or accompaniment) extended over a single chord, distinguishing R & B and soul, more centered around the progression of chords. Like much of the African influenced music, funk is usually built on a groove created from rhythmic instruments such as electric guitar and electric bass. The funk groups sometimes have a wind section formed by several saxophones, trumpets and, sometimes, a trombone, which play rhythmic “hits”. Many of the most famous bands of the genre also played disco and soul music. Funk was a decisive influence on the development of disco and Afrobeat music. On the other hand, funk samples have been widely used in genres such as hip hop, house and drum and bass.

Now, you can call “Funky´´ to the music that has a similar structure to the original Funk. This has derivate to a really big variety of things, such as the way of dressing, (in which our company is located), a dance, etc..
